Elmer L. Cotten, age 92, of Fredonia, N.Y., died at his home in the presence of his daughter, Carole; heart-daughter Christine Wagner; nephew Paul Cotten and beloved caregiver, Mary Jane Wagner on Monday January 28, 2019. He was born July 8, 1926 in Hamburg, N.Y. to Elmer and Mabel (Triftshauser) Cotten. He grew up in Eden, N.Y. and attended Eden Schools. Elmer enlisted in the U.S. Army as a 17 year old and served in WWII. He returned to Eden High School after being discharged and received his high school diploma in 1948. On July 2, 1951 he married Betty Jane Kelly. The couple was married 34 years at the time of Betty’s passing on March 16, 1986. He was employed as a custodian at the SUNY Fredonia Rockefeller Center. Elmer was owner-operator of Four Brothers Supply Co. in Fredonia. He loved folk and bluegrass music, and was deeply involved in the folk music community. He was an accomplished ragtime piano and guitar player, singer and story teller, and shared these gifts with many people over the years.

Elmer is survived by: his daughter, Carole Cotten- Figueiredo (John) of Hillsboro, OR.; grandson Noah Figueiredo; siblings: Jack (Carol) Cotten, Joel (Margrit) Cotten, Nancy (Bob) Umiker and several nieces and nephews; Besides his wife and parents, Elmer is predeceased by two siblings: Paul E. Cotten and Jane (late Dick) Hydic.

Calls may be made Friday 2-4pm and 6-8pm at the LARSON-TIMKO Funeral Home, 20 Central Avenue, Fredonia, N.Y. A memorial service will be Saturday 11am at the First United Methodist Church of Fredonia, 25 Church Street, Fredonia, N.Y. Full Military Honors will be accorded at Church by the Dunkirk Joint Veterans Council. Interment will be in the Webster Cemetery. Memorial contributions in Mr. Cotton’s memory may be made to the 1891 Fredonia Opera House, 9 Church Street, Fredonia, NY 14063.
