Obituary

Louise H. Howe (Holbert), age 90, of Fredonia, NY, died Thursday March 21, 2019 at the Chautauqua Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Dunkirk, N.Y. Louise was born May 18, 1928 in the Township of Bingham, PA to Clinton S. and Mabel (Bartoo) Holbert. She attended Indiana State Teachers College in Indiana, PA. On April 16, 1949 she married Phillip Burdette Howe in Bingham Center, PA. The couple was married 52 years at the time of Phillip’s death on August 1, 2001. Louise and her husband began raising their family on a dairy farm in Pennsylvania until they were called into the ministry in 1961, serving churches in New York State and Massachusetts until their retirement in 1993.

She enjoyed serving church congregations as a pastor’s wife so she continued sharing hospitality at churches after retirement. She and her husband served as Clergy Team for United Marriage Encounter. Louise was a member of the Fredonia First United Methodist Church where she felt welcomed and accepted. This spirituality continued through socializing and welcoming new residents at the WCA Home in Fredonia where she resided for the past 3 ½ years. Serving others was Louise’s special gift. Louise loved sewing, crafting, was an avid pie maker, and baker. She was a volunteer at Brooks Memorial Hospital for 20 years. The family sends a special thank you to the WCA Home and Chautauqua Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for their tender loving care.

Louise is survived by her children: Robert (Laura) Howe of Providence, RI, Alan (Louise) Howe of Sun City, FL, Rebecca (Dennis) Krzyzanowicz of Fredonia, NY and Cynthia (Joseph) Gajewski of Chicago, Il; grandchildren: Jeremy (Kelsey) Krzyzanowicz, Benjamin (Leah) Howe, Nathaniel (Emily) Howe, Erin (Marcos) Alvalle, Andrew Howe, Parker Gajewski, Remy Gajewski, and Andrew Lee; great grandchildren: Cayden Alvalle, Hudson Krzyzanowicz, Julia Howe and Samuel Howe; a brother, John Holbert of Bedford, PA and nieces, nephews and cousins.
Besides her parents, Louise is predeceased by her husband Philip Burdette Howe and a brother Milford Holbert.

Calls may be made Friday (March 29, 2019) from 4-7pm at the LARSON-TIMKO Funeral Home, 20 Central Avenue, Fredonia, N.Y. Funeral services will be held at the Fredonia First United Methodist Church, 25 Church Street, Fredonia, N.Y., Saturday (March 30, 2019) at 11 am. Interment will be in the N. Bingham Cemetery, N. I worked with Bud almost 30 years ago on the Cabinet, and always felt so comfortable with Louise. She was quietly gracious with a sense of humor and a deep love for her husband, family and church. And she always dressed to perfection! What a difference she and Bud made in the lives of so many people, including my own. Blessings to all, Rebecca Dolch

I met Louise's youngest daughter Cindy during the first week of college. We lived on the same floor in the dorm and had many of the same classes. We became fast friends. I loved going to her parents home, the Reverend and Mrs. Howe. It was warm and cozy and loving, exactly what you picture in your mind when you hear "happy home". Mrs. Howe was especially kind and welcoming to me. I have wonderful memories of her cooking the most amazing meals for us, from scratch, mind you! To this day, her chicken and broccoli, or as we lovingly called it "CheeBee" is still the most delicious thing I have ever eaten. She used to send Cindy some on the regular to keep in the freezer and when they realized it was disappearing faster than expected, Mrs. Howe magically started sending some extra portions with my name on them. ;) Smart, lovely, loving woman. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
