Obituary

On April 7, 2019, Alfred Shalkowski formerly of Dunkirk, N.Y., died after a long illness in Tucson, AZ at the age of 87. Alfred Shalkowski is survived by his four children: Scott (Judith) Shalkowski of Leeds, England, Kathleen Shalkowski-Kahn of Tucson, AZ, Christine Shalkowski of Columbia, SC, Mark (Emily) Shalkowski of Katy, TX. He is survived by a sister Carol Geric of Naples, Fl, grandchildren (Jeanna, Elana, Kaitlin, Michaela, Harrison, Sophia Grace, Claire, Brooke, and Samuel), great grandchildren (Amelia and Joshua), step-children, and step-grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his beloved wife (Barbara), parents, and brother (William).
Alfred was born at home in Pittsburgh, Pa. on April 3, 1932 to Alfred & Anna Shalkowski. After high school, he graduated from Penn State University in 1954 with a bachelor degree in horticulture. Alfred was the first Shalkowski to graduate college. During the Korean War, he served in the Army at Fort Smith, AK. Later, after completing his military service, Alfred moved with his family to Western New York and started working for a local nursery and doing freelance landscape design. Alfred later accepted a job at SUNY Fredonia. For many years he took great pride in overseeing the university grounds and the university president’s house gardens. Alfred continued working at SUNY Fredonia until his retirement. He enjoyed morning coffee with his friends, Thursday night cards, volunteering at the Fredonia Presbyterian Church, delivering Meals on Wheels with his wife, Barbara, tending his bird feeders, tirelessly chasing squirrels from the feeders, and endless gardening. A sweet footnote, Alfred’s longtime friend and neighbor (Henry Wallace) died the very next day.
Calls may be made at LARSON-TIMKO Funeral Home, 20 Central Avenue on Friday April 26, 2019 from 11 am – 1 pm, where a funeral service will follow at 1 pm. Rev. Cynthia Lundquist will officiate the ceremony. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Alfred’s life. On-line condolences may be made at larsontimkofuneralhome.com.

Very sorry to hear of Al's passing today in the Fredonia Statement. Al was my boss at SUNY Fredonia for 3 years including the summers where I was a maintenance helper and painted the dorms in the summer. I remember the interview he gave me before my hire where we talked baseball a little. He asked my my batting average and I told him only .250 but that I was a pitcher. :) Think he would be happy to know that I am a self-employed painter in Rochester, NY and have been since 1996. Al gave me a chance and I will forever be grateful.
