Marie A. Cave (Hassett), 95, of Berry Road, Fredonia, New York, died Monday April 15, 2019 at her home. She was born 1923 in Olean, New York to Joseph L. Hassett and Clara (Nichols) Hassett. Marie was a graduate of Fredonia High School and earned her R.N. degree at the Huron Road Hospital School of Nursing in Cleveland, Ohio.

She began her nursing career at Brooks Memorial Hospital in Dunkirk, N.Y. working in the maternity and surgery departments. In 1946 she married her high school sweetheart, James A. Cave. After her children were born she left nursing to help her husband run the family business, Forestville Frosted Food Lockers, later Cave’s Food Center. In 1964 Marie resumed her nursing career, joining the staff of the SUNY Fredonia Health Center at LoGrasso Hall. She retired in 1987.
Marie was active in the early years of the 4-H Horse Program as the leader of the Lakeview Trail Riders. She was also a charter member of Chautauqua County Horseman’s Association (CCHA). She was a member of The Order of Eastern Star (OES) Fredonia Chapter 258 and served as Matron in 1954. Marie also belonged to the American Legion Auxiliary of Forestville Post # 0933 and was a member of the Fredonia United Methodist Church. Marie enjoyed the family’s horses, working on puzzles of all sorts and playing cards in card club with her friends.
Marie is survived by: a daughter, Susan L. Cave, of Fredonia; a son, John A. Cave, of Acworth, Georgia; two grandsons: Justin (Lonna) Cave, of Marietta, Georgia, and Casey (Daphne) Cave, of Asheville, North Carolina and three great grandchildren: Lorelei and Annily Cave of Marietta, GA., and Conan Cave of Asheville, N.C.
In addition to her parents, Marie is pre-deceased by her husband of 63 years, James A. Cave; her brother and sister-in-law, F. Leo and Mary Jo Hassett, and a grandson Jonathan A. Cave.
There will be no prior visitation. A graveside committal service will be held at Forest Hill Cemetery, Fredonia,
Saturday May 25, 2019 at 11 am.
