Obituary

Bruce R. Patterson, 85, of Dunkirk, N.Y., died Tuesday April 14, 2020 at Brooks Memorial Hospital. He was born October 18, 1934 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Amsterdam, New York to Florence (Rulison) and Keith Patterson. When Bruce was a baby he moved to Buffalo with his parents. He attended Buffalo School #48. Upon graduating from 8th grade, Bruce and his parents moved to Jewett Holmwood Road in Orchard Park, N.Y. Bruce helped his mother and father build their new home and they moved into it in January of 1949. Bruce’s first year of high school was 1949, attending Buffalo Tech High School for two years. He then enrolled at Orchard Park High School, graduating with the class of 1952. He started college at the University of Buffalo, where he attended from 1953-1954. He was then offered a position as officer engineer/ technician for a local engineer and surveyor and still continued to take courses at the University of Buffalo in the evening. In the spring of 1956, at 21 years old, Bruce moved to Evanston, Illinois. He worked for a professor of engineering at the Northwestern University. In June 1957, Bruce returned to Buffalo and was drafted into the Army on June 27, 1957, the same day as Elvis Presley. They were both discharged on the same day two years later. While in the service Bruce was a draftsman for the U.S. Signal Core and assigned to the Chief Signal Office as a draftsman at the Pentagon. In December of 1959, Bruce began working for the N.Y.S. Dept. of Transportation as a professional engineer. In 1968 Bruce married and in 1969 his son David was born. It was in 1978, he met Mary DiNoto and married her in the fall of 1979. Bruce was one of the engineers involved when the bridge was built over Chautauqua Lake with his field office in Bemus Point. Bruce played golf for 40 years with fellow workers at the Chautauqua Golf Course. He and Mary earned the title of National Bridge Masters while competing in numerous tournaments in the U.S. and Canada. Bruce and his wife Mary combined their bridge tournament trips with extended vacations and sightseeing trips. Bruce always had a boat and loved to fish. He played pinochle on Friday’s at the Beaver Club and was a member of a local men’s and a couple’s bridge group.

Bruce is survived by: his wife, Mary (Clancy) Patterson; pre-deceased by his daughter, Vicky Patterson Arrigetti; also survived by 3 children: Dr. Deborah M. DiNoto (Craig Cdinski) of Machias, NY, Michael Timothy DiNoto of Cassadaga, NY, and David Bruce Patterson; two grandchildren: Kristen E. Mary DiNoto and Kylie Stanton, both of Fort Mill S.C.; two brothers; Brian (Gail) Patterson of North Tonawanda, N.Y. and Gary (Carolyn) Patterson of Nashville, TN.; nephews: Guy (Sabina) Patterson of Seattle WA., Peter Michael (Robin) Sears of Hilton Head, SC., Anthony Sears of Aspen, CO., Christopher (Frances) Sears of Greece, N.Y. and Eric Patterson; and a niece Krissy (Billy) Craig.

A memorial Mass at St. Joseph’s Church, Fredonia, will be held at a later date.
