Joan Markey Steele

12.15.1928 - 05.02.2020:

Joan was a woman of love. She sought life and she gave her heart’s love to her husband Ed of 70 years, to her children and to her community. She was raised in Staten Island, NY, amid opportunities for tennis and then golf, a game that brought her local fame and many championship tournaments, both individually and as team partner to her beloved husband, Edward Cudahy Steele who died Dec 22, 2016.

Joan was a doer. If there was a new task to learn, she studied what was new until she could present herself with grace and with ease. Her nine grandchildren learned at her knee and then at her elbow and then from her utter devotion to helping others feel welcome in a myriad of ways.

Joan was a mother of five children who worked tirelessly to help carve a way into the world that would prove durable and filled with grace for each of us. She saw long before others might, that children follow the lead of their parents. She made sure her family experienced unity. And we each strove to embody it. She follows Robert Markey Steele, their devoted son, who died in a double bicycle accident, June 7, 1973 at the age of 19.

Joan was loved, motivated and constant in her loyalty to the Catholic faith and the ways it could hold heart, soul and the fears of the night. She never gave up. She always started again.

Joan’s later life gave her time to rest, interact in small heart-filled sentences with perhaps, the sweetest smile this side of the Pacific Ocean.

Joan Markey Steele, known most recently as “quite a lady,” took her last steps on May 2, 2020. She died at home knowing she was loved and now held in the perpetual arms of her maker.

She is survived by their four children: Edward L. Steele, Anne Steele Hale, Susan Steele Jennings and Michael C. Steele. She is also survived by nine grandchildren: Jenna S. Scanlan, Brooke S. Ricketts, Miles P. Skinner, John B. Hayes III, Andrew S. Hayes, Caitlin H. Roniger, Charlotte M. Steele, Lily C. Steele and Frances J. Steele. Also surviving are six great-grandchildren.

Dear Steele children:
We were saddened to learn of your MOM's passing-and extend our deepest sympathies. We were a part of the Steele neighborhood, the Miller's ,Cenendella's, Archer's,Cook's, Millonzi's and Thompson's . And many memories are flowing from us now as we recall the goodness of the Steele family and the love expressed to our families. The pool was significant as our son, T. Whitson, had the privilege of maintaining the pool area. All the neighborhood kids gathered there for a great time together. And your Mom was so gracious as she would come out to visit all of us. And, Susan, you were an excellent baby sitter for our 3 young children. So many good memories of our days on Central Ave. We were saddened when Bobby was taken from us at an early age.
We miss you all and will be praying for you all in the recent loss of your Mom, one of SIDEY'S favorite customers. I could go on and on with the joy of living in the same neighbor hood with the Steele's and other great neighbors.
We currently are living in Pineville, NC in a 55 and over retirement community, with Jessica and T. Whitson nearby. Miriam married Ben from Michigan and touch base with her, now and then.

Mr and Mrs Steele were neighbors of ours on Central Ave in Fredonia. When my Family moved to Fredonia from Pittsburgh back in 1972, Mr and Mrs Steele welcomed us with Open arms and a Warm heart. Joan and Ed were the Kindest people I have ever met in my lifetime. I will never forget that Joan and Ed were there for my Parents and our entire Family when we lost a Brother to an accident back in 1976. Right after my Brothers accident, Joan wrote a Beautiful letter to my Mother expressing her sympathy and her feelings in losing her Son Bobby. In this letter She wrote "Death is not the end. Nor is it the Beginning of the end. But the end of the Beginning". I have always remembered these kind words written by Joan after all these years. Even though it has been many years since I had seen Mr and Mrs Steele I always had a special place in my heart for them. They were such a Special Couple. To the entire Family of Joan Steele, I send my heartfelt sympathy on behalf of the Family of Tom and Rosemary Miller

I was very fortunate to have been friends with the Steele children during my teenage years. This was truly a learning experience for me. I was always treated with the greatest repect by the whole family including Mr. and Mrs Steele. Going to their beautiful home was always a pleasing experience and Mrs Steele was a gracious host. I remember going to Shorewood Country Club to watch Mr Steele and his son Bobbie win the Williams Tournament. Bobbie was a very gifted golfer at a young age and it was very sad that he passed so prematurely. Redwing was a very well run business that was very benaficial to the community and sadly missed by this area. Thank you very much and condolences to the family. John Ryder Fredonia, N.Y.
