Carl was first elected Niagara Town Justice in 1969 and at age 28 was the youngest Town Justice in the state of New York where he served two four-year terms. He participated as a justice in the law and youth program in local high schools and, for many years, lectured on the function of the local criminal court in the same program. As a Justice of the Peace, Carl performed over 500 marriages in Niagara Falls. Carl and Trish moved to Fredonia in 1980. Carl and his wife Trish gave back to the community in countless ways, such as giving away thousands of dogwood tree saplings every year to the residents of Fredonia; donating a tower clock to the Village of Fredonia Commons in 2016, and body cameras to the Fredonia Police Department. A devout Ukrainian Catholic throughout his life, Carl and his wife Trish were married at the church on Ferry Avenue in Niagara Falls, New York which is now named Protection of The Blessed Virgin Mary Ukrainian Catholic Church. They were parishioners throughout their residency in Niagara Falls. Both remained actively involved in church functions and significant rituals including the annual Holy Saturday Blessing of the Easter Basket, a tradition passed down from Carl’s family members. When the new church was built, Carl discreetly donated the gold onion dome which can still be seen affixed to the roof of the church. It’s a recognizable architectural feature of Ukrainian and other Eastern European religious places of worship.
