Norma (Berry) St. George, age 90, of Fredonia, died Sunday January 10, 2021 at Chautauqua Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Dunkirk, NY.
Norma was the eldest daughter of Harold and Perpetua Berry and grew up in Williamsville, New York. She was a graduate of Newman Catholic High School and the former Chown Business School.
Norma is survived by her four children: Sally St. George (Dan Wulff) of Calgary, Canada; Charles H. (Marilyn) St. George of Nashua, New Hampshire; Luann (Peter) Proper of Fredonia; and Jude St. George of East Northport, NY; eight grandchildren: Jessica (Kevin) Koloen, Jacob (Amber) Proper, Joshua (Lindsay) Bald, Jill (Chad) MacGregor, Andrea Proper (Julio Alvalle), Maureen St. George, Katy (Brett) Shaver and Nina St. George; eleven great-grandchildren: Kaitlyn, Alina, Tiernan, Elizabeth, Katherine, Evelyn, Charles, John, Lyla, Joseph and Harper; sister Laura Wright, brother-in-law Arthur Goldhawk; very good friend, Lisa Romano, who was a dedicated caregiver during Norma’s sickness; and several nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her parents, her husband, Charles, twin grandsons, her brother, Gerard Berry, sister, MaryLou Goldhawk and nephews Mark and David Zimicki.
For 30 years, Norma worked at SUNY Fredonia in several positions, completing her career in the School of Music as Secretary for the Dean. She also had a generous volunteer history at St. Anthony’s Church including Mother’s Club, Bookkeeper, Eucharistic minister, RCIA, Catholic Daughters, Gardener, and leader of the decorating committee. Norma was an active member in the Chadwick Garden Club and her ceramics group. She spent several years volunteering at the polling sites, local blood banks, and even volunteered for the Guide Dog Foundation by sewing vests for the dogs in training. Norma was always willing to help any of her friends, neighbors or family as she genuinely valued service and life. This was also demonstrated in her passion and commitment to the pro-life movement.
Norma led a very active and giving life. Her greatest gift was to love her family unconditionally. Norma always stayed true to her values of honesty, integrity, family, generosity and loving God. She played badminton, rode her bicycle to work, worked in her gardens tending her roses and was always seen walking in all kinds of weather. In quiet moments, she read fiction, knitted, and prayed her rosary. Her most memorable talents were that of master seamstress and quilter, flower arranging, and hosting her family and friends. Norma sewed wedding and bridesmaid dresses, heirloom baptismal outfits, first communion dresses, prom dresses, and quilts. Norma could whip up a flower arrangement in a moment’s notice and was steadfast to her tradition of delivering boxes of Christmas cookies to friends and relatives, even if you lived out of town. When family and friends came to town, you could count on your favorite dish to be made and at least two different types of pie from scratch.
Norma’s family extends their deep gratitude to the care staff at CTNRC. Memorial contributions in Norma’s memory may be made to St. Gianna Molla Pregnancy Outreach Center, 32 Moore Ave, Fredonia, New York, or Darwin R. Barker Library.
